In 2012, my first athlete diagnosed with Vocal Cord Dysfunction (VCD) walked in my office door. It was a steep and fascinating learning curve for me, but my client had done her homework and had a pretty good idea of how I could help her.
Together we researched and put a plan together…and it worked! When VCD struck, she could get it under control quickly and get back in the game.
Since that time, VCD has shown up in my office many times and in 2015 I took the opportunity to educate my sport psychology colleagues on how they can help athletes with VCD. Treatment for VCD requires a team approach between medical doctors, speech therapists, and mental training professionals.
Here is an interview that I gave while presenting my poster at the Association for Applied Sport Psychology conference: http://www.podiumsportsjournal.com/2015/10/22/athletes-recover-return-to-sport-fast-from-vocal-cord-dysfunction/
